The Shuttle Disaster by the Numbers
NASA is a business entity, even though it is a government agency. Just as we
would use the date of incorporation for a business start date, we will use the
date upon which President Eisenhower signed the bill creating NASA as the start
date. This signing set the cycles for this agency.
With a founding date of July 29, 1958, NASA is in a 14/5 personal year in 2003.
February is a 7 personal month and February 1 was an 8 personal day. This agency
is on the same cycle as the universal year and is therefore in sync with the
general mood of the country.
The 14/5 personal year of NASA indicates that the agency was in a mood to take
risks, perhaps even to the extent of being impulsive. NASA also has a 5 Life
path number. It learns by expanding its experience beyond the current knowledge.
The rashness of its decisions would have been somewhat tempered, but not totally
dampened, by the energy of the 7 personal month. The 7 would provide a solid
mental basis to undergird the risk taking. However, this disaster occurred on
the very first day of the 7 month. The planning and decision making occurred in
January (a 6 personal month) or earlier.
Although the energies may have induced some laxity in the final inspection of
the shuttle, the launch, from the viewpoint of the numbers, did not appear to be
be an unreasonable risk.
The cost of this disaster in terms of the loss of seven of humanities best and
brightest was a heavy price to pay. It is now up to the agency to make this
disaster a stepping stone to greater achievement. The explosion occurred on an 8
day in a 7 month in a 5 year. The 8 says to look at the total picture. Don't get
bogged down in the immediate details of the disaster. See how this situation can
bring about an even greater plan. The most fitting memorial to these astronauts
is to use the circumstances of their death to enhance the cause for which they
died. Shutting down the space program would be to totally disrespect their
contribution.
NASA, to fulfill its life path, needs to stay on the cutting edge of technology
(5 life path) and to constantly be experimenting with innovative ideas. The
shuttle Columbia was already past its projected life. Although it had been
reworked several times, there were limitations as to how many changes could be
made to it. Replacing this shuttle will allow NASA to incorporate new design
elements and enhanced technical features into a new model. The cost of a new
shuttle will be greater than the renovation of Columbia, but in the long run,
the potential for progress is greatly enhanced.
That the disaster happened on an 8 day, says that the replacement of the shuttle
needs to take place immediately to achieve the best results. This will be a
chaotic year in NASA. Expect a major shake-up in the structure and funding.
These changes are necessary for NASA to fulfill its mission.
