Making Money in Your Business
Contrary to a popular philosophy of social consciousness, the purpose of
business is to make a profit. No business can long survive without being able to
cover the costs. No employee will have a job if there is no money for salaries.
No company can pay dividends from a negative net worth.
Even the most socially conscious business needs to make money to provide these
community benefits. It all comes from profits.
If you accept the premise that a business must make money, then let's look at
how the numbers enhance that possibility.
Trust: A consistent image builds trust in customers and prospects. A slight
doubt is enough to kill a sale. Certain businesses tend to create an image
related to the nature of the business. For example, banks, investment houses and
attorneys' offices traditionally wanted to display a feeling of stability by
elegant classical decor. When you walked into these establishments, you sensed
the stability and prosperous nature of the business.
When a business is pioneering into a new area that may not be readily accepted,
the founders may tap into this conditioning by going classical to gain quick
acceptance. However, after the idea becomes widespread, this business will
damage its image if it then switches to a more suitable progressive look. In the
transition they will lose the trust of established customers. The hope is that
the change will attract enough new customers to counterbalance that loss.
It is important to decide up front what image is most appropriate for your
business, or what image is most comfortable for you. The next step is to
determine the numbers that will support that image. If the numbers and the image
do not agree, the discord will cause a struggle for survival.
You may think that you are clever enough to hide the conflict in energies. That
battle is not only difficult, it is not winnable. When you read a well-written
novel the characters are consistent in their actions. When they violate that
consistency, the author must provide a plausible explanation. Without telling us
why the character acted in this unexpected manner, the author loses credibility
and we, as the reader, lose interest in the novel.
How do we determine inconsistent actions? Usually we have an instinctive feel
for what this character portrays. This instinct is based upon nuances that we
coordinate subconsciously. Any novel that has become a classic has survived
because of a consistency in the characters. From the information that the author
provides, even if it is just a first name, a numerologist will get a picture of
this individual. If you run the numbers of the main characters in any such
novel, you will find that the author has incorporated the traits of the numbers
for that character. You as the reader also instinctively know that certain
traits will fit that character, and will be disappointed when the character is
not true to his numbers.
Your customers have this same instinctive feeling for the image that your
numbers should convey. Don't disappoint them. You will lose their business.
Morale: When you walk into any business establishment, you get a feeling for the
morale of the workers. People who are doing work that suits them are happy and
productive. People who have to force themselves to do the job will be unhappy.
Every thought that is sent out by the people in this environment creates an aura
that affects the customer. A workplace that is marked by conflict will repel
business.
By using the numbers, you can know quite accurately the type of work that is
most suitable to a particular employee. You can keep that employee motivated and
happy. It is difficult to motivate an unhappy employee no matter what you offer.
The problem goes to the core of the positioning.
Not everyone who has the qualifications that you seek is a good candidate for
employment with your business. If the numbers of your business are in conflict
with the personal numbers of the prospective employee, he may start out with a
tremendous surge that seems to justify your hiring. Before long, however, this
employee will try to bring about changes that suit him, but that may not be
consistent with the business. He will sow discontent. The bright promise of his
hiring will become quickly tarnished.
